In Pat's words, this is “a fabulous block of grapes” that he earmarked long ago for a delicate wine. The block sits on granite at a lofty 460 metres. The fruit was harvested on 6th March and very gently pressed as bunches to old puncheons. After six weeks, the wine was transferred to stainless steel for malolactic conversion and allowed to settle before racking and a classic tirage bottling. Pat sums it up best: “Much like last year, we have a gorgeous balance of bright fruits with persistent acidity and a frame that allows the granite minerality to shine. A dark and spiced example of this wonderful Friulian native. A decant is advised here. Dark Olive and Purple hue. The deepest and richest little red wine. The complexity of the perfume makes me stop and smell for an extended moment. Cinnamon, fresh torn bark, rosemary, fresh tobacco, muddled plums, black cherries, rose petals, milk chocolate, plunger coffee. It smells like the ideal Sunday morning breakfast – soft and welcoming with warm spice. The wine will require some time to open, yet the impressive length and vertical tannins are incredibly tempting immediately. Once awake, beautiful salty liquorice, red and black pepper, and clove spice wrap a brooding core of plum, ripe blood orange and blood. Cracked fennel seed amaro finishes the wine with a lovely, salivating bitterness. It's super delicious to me – very balanced and promising for the years ahead.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJust three rows of Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso at Chalmers in the south east corner of the property on the ultra red Colbo soils. These blocks are planted east\/west orientation which helps moderate the impact of the midday sun. Planted in 2015, these vines are very well suited to Colbinabbin and one of my very favourite parcels each season. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe wine is harvested on phenolics, typically with delicious dark fruit. Entirely destemmed and fermented in a combination of closed and open stainless steel. Pump-overs are done daily once fermentation begins, with plenty of oxygen via splashing and délestage.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePressing takes place depending on phenolic resolution, which was after two and a half or three weeks depending on the ferment. We press to taste, taking a moderate amount of pressings with free run and combining them immediately. We keep the wine in an unsealed tank post-pressing, allowing oxygen to work the tannins into shape. Racked to barrel a few weeks later. A single new Stockinger demi-muid was selected and kept in cask without racking or addition until June 2025. Racked and blended with a small unoaked portion for balance. It's a fabulous block of Syrah and one I have wanted to make something delicate from for some time. Early harvested when we see beautiful strawberry water, raspberry, fresh mint and rose water flavours on the vine. Extra careful whole-bunch pressing — long and slow — with only the very finest juice taken for this cuvée. Fermentation begins in stainless steel before being transferred to old French puncheon for the majority and remainder of fermentation, malo and élevage on lees. Topped studiously prior to blending. When blending, we consider early-cut Blanc de Blanc barrels for length, complexity and added finesse — the challenge being not to dull the floral and delicious fruit of the Syrah base too much. Tight phenolics pulling to the middle of the palate and small berries – cranberry, candied raspberry, fresh strawberry – pushing back out against the herbaceousness. Lots of energy across the palate. Acidity is lifted, and the wine has a beautiful, fine texture. It is very interesting, very delicious, and very easy to drink, although it invites a little more pondering over than in some years. A very cool iteration of the Super Juice.  An early-harvest from the A Block at Willoughby Bridge is used as a sort of starter ferment, direct-pressed to tank and later moved to old puncheon, where healthy yeast were encouraged with air circulation. CVT230 clone from C Block at Willoughby Bridge was picked a few days later, on the 18th of February, destemmed and inoculated with larger amounts of the earlier-harvested A Block. Allowed to ferment undisturbed.
